This is the image that springs to mind when most people think of a Greek helmet. The first instinct of a warrior is to protect the head, and the bronze helmet was developed fairly early in the Bronze Age. This piece of head protection, however, was meant to deflect a blow rather than absorb it. This late form with its tall horse hair crest made the warrior appear taller, more intimidating yet regal, but had very little practical function beyond that. Made from solid red bronze 1/16" thick, the helm comes with an adjustable liner.

The bronze helm was developed at a fairly early age, but for some reason bronze was not conceived as body armor for some years later. This probably had something to do with the high cost and rarity of the alloy at the beginning of the Bronze Age. Although this Cuirass is thin and next to nothing when compared to steel armor of later ages, it still offered far more protection than leather armor and was much more effective at deflecting a blow from spear, sword, arrow, dart or stone, all which were employed by the ancient Greek warriors. Made as a set, the breast and backplate are adjustable with two straps and buckles at the sides and one at the shoulder. One size fits frame from about 5'6" to 6'2", 150 to 200 lbs.

This type of anatomical breastplate was first achieved from hot, wet formed leather. In later years the same form was hammered out of thin bronze and eventually copied by the Romans. The wet forming of the leather produced a much harder and altogether tougher type of armor that would offer far more protection from a spear thrust or sword cut than a linen or leather corset. One of the most gorgeous helmets ever producted. Although the Greeks used many other styles and types, this is the one most closely associated with the greek Hoplite and Alexander of Macedon. Made of bronze, it was designed to provide protection, visibility and allow the wearer plenty of air. The clean, spare shape was the basis for many of the classical helmets of the Renaissance. This fully wearable copy utilized the thin wall construction technique of the originals. They were often thickened around the face or, as in our version, reinforced. This helmet was designed to deflect blows, rather than absorb them. Hand forged, not cast, this is truly a spectacular helmet.

The Machaira and the Falcata were effective and devastating weapons, and quite capable of shearing a bronze helmet. The Greeks were feared warriors, with spear and shield being the primary weapon and armor. It is closely copied from a type of Lorica found in Newstead, Scotland, that dates from the second century A.D. This armor is quite flexible and allows pelnty of freedom of movement.
